Charles Edward Anderson Berry was born on October 18, 1926 at 2520 Goode Avenue (now Annie Malone Drive) in St. Louis, MO. His mother, Martha, was qualified as a schoolteacher; his father, Henry, was a contractor and deacon of the nearby Antioch Baptist Church.
