The band name has ancient Greek roots and originally means "governors, lords". In ancient Russia, Archont was the name of princes that ruled their domains in early Middle Ages.

Archontes has been formed in the beginning of 1993 by the vocalist Andrey Fedorenko, also known as "Archont". Since the start of its musical career the band performed in a quite unusual style for the Russian rock scene - power melodic metal (fantasy melodic metal, as it is referred to by the musicians themselves) with classical and folk influences.
