Mike Tempesta-guitars

Buddies Jeff Schartoff and Scott Ellis thought up Human Waste Project while on a road trip to catch one of the Lollapalooza shows. Drafting champion shreiker Aimee Echo into their effort, the band then searched their native Huntington Beach, Ca scene for a guitarist who could mosh the line between Alternative Rawk and Metal. Guitarist John Monte tried out and seemed a tight fit, but soon differences in style soon became apparent. The trio tried and discarded many a wannabee before at last lucking out with transplanted Bronx axist Mike Tempesta.

Once they got busy getting busy, Human Waste Project quickly found themselves recording and playing the college radio and club circuit with rabid audience response. On the strength of this grass-roots hype, HWP landed a deal with Hollywood Records. There, the band joined forces with Korn/Deftones producer Ross Robinson and began recording a major debut in 1996. Bad luck hounded our heroes, however; work on the record was held up by changes on Hollywood’s roster and interrupted by the wild fires that swept Southern California that summer. At one point, HWP had to literally stop playing, unplug and rush all their gear and the master tapes into to a van in order to escape the fires as they ate thru Malibu. Finally, tho months later than they’d originally expected, Human Waste Project made their entrance in the fall of 1997, with E-Lux.
