It was the huge acoustics of the Hordern Pavilion that first fostered Jumping Jack's (aka Paul Fernandez) addiction to electronic music. The swelling carnivales that were the Hordern's dance parties had JJ suckered in feet first. First a dancer, then as a vinyl junkie, a DJ and a producer as well as a live musician, DJ instructor and radio announcer in between, Jumping Jack gave in to dance music and it's magic ways. After securing his first gig at Sydney's Daily Planet back in 1991, Paul was at the forefront of the burgeoning rave scene. As parties moved from clubs to warehouses, fields and backyards, Paul became Jumping Jack, a DJ who first flirted with the harder sounds of techno and house that became a unique Sydney sound. From the revered Psychosis series to Krackerjack, Prodigy, Flim Flam, Love and Aztec, Jumping Jack was billed on countless flyers while his mixtapes developed a cult following amongst punters.
During the mid '90s Rave moved back into the clubs and festivals sprung up across the country. Paul moved with them, landing residencies at renowned clubs such as Sublime, Icebox and Zoom while regularly performing at countless one-off parties and major events like Strawberry Fields, across the country. In that period, Jumping Jack has been billed alongside some of the worldwide dance community's finest ambassadors - Orbital, The Shamen, Carl Cox, The Breeder, Sasha, CJ Bolland and Grooverider to name a few. As a DJ, Jumping Jack is well regarded for technical proficiency, and has showcased those seamless mixing skills as an instructor for DMC. Alongside this, his distinctive style and diverse taste in styles of house, trance and techno is what gives him his edge, but Paul is an accomplished artist outside of DJing with some important productions already to his name.
Ravers may remember Paul as one half of the live PA "Flow Motion", who apart from releasing a string of tracks, also supported Scotland's finest techno act Ultrasonic on a national tour of Australia. Paul has also produced, mastered and remixed tracks for a number of local and international artists, including Michael Wells (Force Mass Motion), Subsonic, Nik Fish, Abel and Mach V. With his own studio - Midi Evil - up and running, expect some jumpin and pumpin material for the new millennium. Paul has also been a part of Sydney's fledgling dance radio, co-producing a cult weekly program "Trance Addiction" on 88.9FM and the popular "Essential Selection" on New Wave 99.3 FM. He's also worn the promoter's hat, promoting and managing the highly successful regular Friday nighter, "Club Joy" at Underground Charlies.
At present, apart from a hectic schedule of guest appearances, Paul resides at "Sublime" on Friday nights, playing hard house and techno at Sydney's premier club, home. On Sunday nights, Paul lends his unique blend of nu-nrg techno and trance at "Energy". In addition, Paul frequently travels both interstate and to New Zealand, for guest spots at various club nights and large scale events which will include the launch for his latest mix CD for Slamm Records. "Down Underground Vol 2" features an eclectic mix, from floaty house to storming techno, and showcases the flawless mixing talents and unique energy and charisma that Jumping Jack has become so renowned for.
