Ianina Pietrantonio (flute) and Cecilia Zabala (guitar) formed Las Morochas in 2003 in the city of Buenos Aires. They perform music influenced by a broad variety of styles, including tango and Argentine folk, jazz and contemporary classical music.

In 2005 they released Milonga sin Palabras, a recording of the works of Astor Piazzolla, Argentina’s iconoclastic tango musician and composer, and cult figure for classical and jazz lovers throughout the world. Piazzolla outraged traditional tangueros by composing music that was never intended for dancing, introducing jazz and classical elements to revolutionize the tango form. Las Morochas interpret his works with great sensitivity, producing a sound both well-nurtured and sincere, and coloured by their broad experience of other musical genres. As such, their interpretation of Piazzolla’s work sits side-by-side with both old and classic tango, and with contemporary music inspired by regional folk styles from around the world.

“Blacks and whites, euphoria and sadness, sensitivity and vigour—the musicians bring to life these many contrasting moods that are ever-present in Piazzolla’s work.”
Pablo Rego, Tierra de Música

“Las Morochas stride into the genre with audacity, frankness and respect. They show great daring, and they succeed.”
Oscar López Ruiz, guitarist with Piazzolla for 25 years
