It even included two covers of narcoleptic odes—This Heat’s “Sleep” and “Good Night” by the Beatles. It was a slight misnomer, of course; though the EP, and its subsequent full album follow-up, Dimmer, were both suitably mellow and moody, they were more cognizant than comatose....full text

From reading previous reviews about The Zincs and their last album Dimmer, I found out that lead singer James "Jim" Elkington is a depressive character and that the band is a collective of styles and instrumentation. From listening to new album Black Pompadour, I found out that past critical comments on the band are not totally off base, but also land nowhere near an apt description of any of the decent sides of The Zincs and their music....full text

With as distinctive a baritone as Jim Elkington has, it took a few times through The Zincs’ Black Pompadour before I actually realized just how great a pop-rock songwriter he is. Completely sucked in by his somber-toned voice, a funereal mood seemed to permeate the album, but with time it became clear that this was merely a trick he was playing on my ears....full text
