| There was, I’ll admit, a bit of trepidation on my part, as I unwrapped my copy of Simply Red’s new album, entitled Stay. Thoughts and random bits of melody ran through my head as I remembered how much I loved Mick Hucknall’s voice during my high school years, all chattering fears that listening to this album would only disappoint — would only make me think my liking Simply Red was nothing more than teenage fascination, and not really something deserving of merit. ...full text |

Listening to Simply Red is bloody frustrating. Without question, Mick Hucknall owns one of the best voices this country has ever produced, effortlessly switching from tender to tortured or gliding across the octaves without a second thought. The boy's a total natural. Thing is, this is seldom commented upon as for years, the media has slated him for being smug, sleazy and uncool. Even Bo Selecta! takes the mick out of Mick.
