The Rat” was the worst thing to ever happen to The Walkmen. It brought the iPod-lazy—singles, MP3s, mix and matchers—to their shows and records. The comp-kids with their stacks of one-song worthy CDs—oh yeah, I like this one, this is the one I was talking about, I recognize this, it’s on my Now 26. Sure, it led to larger exposure and certainly improved record sales (and an OC appearance to boot), but at a cost that seemed to detract from how valuable The Walkmen really were for geezers like myself in an increasingly fickle music world.

| The Walkmen are already responsible for one of the best albums of this half-spent decade: the woozy 2004 disc Bows + Arrows, which focused the atmospheric jangle of the band's debut into a rougher, angrier, but no less lyrical sound. Thought about this a little bit the other day, of all the bands that have come out in the last 5 or 6 years with two words in the band’s name and the first word being The ….The Walkmen would have to be my favorite. Not disappointing in the least, the Walkmen’s third album A Hundred Miles Off is a fun album that packs a few surprises that may not be all together expected. In the same way that you may have thought “Holy Shit..is that Rod Stewart?” when you first heard the song “The Rat,” you may think to yourself “Holy Shit…is that Bob Dylan?” when you first hear a couple of tracks off A Hundred Miles Off. The similar vocal delivery style is done in a tasteful way acknowledging the omnipresence of Mr. Dylan and not done as a cheap knock-off.
