| AbsolutePunk | | Over the past few years, many lead singers from various bands have started up their own solo project, and while it’s not a new concept, it has been gaining steam recently in the scene. From Dustin Kensrue to Gabe Saporta, some have had great success (Chris Carrabba and Ben Gibbard) to not so much (Claudio Sanchez). Regardless of end results, though, many artists still try their hand at the solo career. | | Jam! | Whaddaya call a guy who hangs out with musicians? A drummer. Unless that guy happens to be Underoath's Aaron Gillespie. Like Dave Grohl, the stickhandler's talents extend far beyond timekeeping. So like Grohl, he's decided to stand up and step out on his own.
The result is the skillful and solid Southern Weather, the debut album from Gillespie's one-man-band project The Almost. Underoath fans might not be shocked by Gillespie's sound, which naturally hews fairly close to the spiritual emo-rock of his day job, with all the requisite surging guitars and heartbroken lyrics and melancholy melodies and yearning, soaring vocals....full text |
| | Silent Urpoar | | Underoath drummer/vocalist Aaron Gillespie's debut release from side project The Almost is not a repeat performance of his full time band by any stretch of the imagination. Most of the tracks find themselves somewhere between pop and a hard rock place, with Gillespie's vocals coming through as the focus for the album. While you can hear hints of Underoath in some of the harder tunes ("Drive There Now" and "I Mostly Copy Other People," featuring vocals from The Starting Line's Kenny Vasoli, who also contributed bass on some tracks, for instance), it is the quieter moments where Southern Weather really succeeds....full text |
