 With the current strength of the American music scene it’s not surprising that some over here in Blighty look across the pond for inspiration. Manchester’s Polytechnic have certainly looked beyond the local Heaton Park and the result here on their debut long player is a highly enjoyable collection of Transatlantic drawled tunes. The driving rhythms, modulating keys and warm harmonies bring The Shins most to mind but there’s also the unpredictability of Tapes n Tapes and lo-fi charms of Pavement in evidence. | When the elements you perceive a band to have are listed out in front of you, it can make shocking reading when it simply doesn't sound like what you thought it did. The pop melodies of early Supergrass, the swaggering faux-crap aesthetic of early Pavement, the jangly Manc idiocy of early Primal Scream… none of these tenets are really all that noticeable in the long run. Where Polytechnic's debut is strongest is in the way they obscure these sounds and make them golden on their own terms....full text |

| Polytechnic is more than an apt name for this bunch of indie boys who craft guitar pop that smacks of undiluted, early-90s studentdom. Taking James, the Boo Radleys and a smidgen of Slowdive as their starting point, the Manchester-based five-piece seem firmly stuck in the last century, but more than happy with their predicament. Like the Magic Numbers before them, their über-jolly tunes are refreshingly cynicism-free; they sound unabashedly happy on songs such as Won't You Come Around and Pep, and their perkiness even allows them to get away with lines like...
