 When a band gains moderate success, two choices arise concerning the future of their music. The first option sees the band utilizing the same formula that earned them recognition. The second option, which is slowly becoming expected, is to completely change directions and release an album that is extremely different stylistically in the hopes of pushing the boundaries of their creativity. Both options have had their fair share of success and failure. For the follow up to 2005’s Doppelganger, The Fall Of Troy has opted for the latter path yielding mixed results. Stumbling upon the Fall of Troy has felt like finding money in my pocket I didn't know was there. The jagged riffs, pounding tempo-changes and sing-scream of Timothy Ward and Thomas Erak entranced me; I was hooked after my first listen of the trio's 2005 sophomore effort, "Doppelgänger."
"Manipulator" finds the group working with the same post-hardcore formula, but this time around everything sparkles with studio gleam and a newfound sense of groove that fuses the furor of At the Drive-In with the atmospherics of King Crimson....full text |

| Funny a band labeled by both fans and detractors as prog-punk/prog-scream/prog-whatever would progress. But have the Fall of Troy really progressed with their newest beast, Manipulator? Some would certainly argue they have, as the band delve into a number of styles new to them, strip some of the blatancy of their previously biggest influences, and produce their most diverse effort to date. But all this considered, is Manipulator actually the Fall of Troy's best effort to date?...full text |
