It's a little difficult not to hum the melody to "Daydream Believer" during the opening of "Here Comes the Phantom", the first track from the Clientele's third full-length album. The chords bump against those of the Monkees classic without mimicking them precisely; it's not what is played that sounds so familiar, but how, as the piano moves with a whimsical bounce that evokes someone dancing in a brightly-lit studio with walls the color of a television's test pattern....full text |

| Sure, indie-rock fans are suckers for good songwriting. But most of the time, an indie band is notable for the way it sounds, long before the words come in. Fans can spot an Arcade Fire song long before Win Butler opens his mouth. Ditto Modest Mouse and The Hold Steady. And that goes double for The Clientele, even though it has a very different fan base from the groups above....full text |

| It’s fair to classify each record by English dream-pop group The Clientele as “growers.” Consistent perhaps to a fault, each of their records to date have been wistful, reverb-drenched, sighing affairs. As such, even the group’s best records — my favorite is 2005’s Strange Geometry — will be take-it-or-leave-it for most listeners; the constant wash of reverb, weepy strings, and singer Alasdair MacLean’s lilting intonations can be a bit frustrating at times....full text |
