COMAS - Spells reviewThe Comas were never supposed to amount to much. Conceived in Chapel Hill as a tongue-in-cheek byproduct of the late-90s alt-country movement, the band somehow got its shit together by 2004 to record Conductor, an album with clever nods to classic indie yet seemingly tailor-made for the then blossoming O.C. Mix audience. While Conductor raked in generally positive reviews, it couldn't quite do the same with teenage girls' allowances, leaving the band in a strange limbo between grass-roots and mass market indie....full text

On their fourth album, these New York guys (and girl) make indie pop rock that tosses in modest atmospherics and stays pretty tuneful. Not all of Spells is as memorable as you’d hope, but cuts like “Red Microphones” and “Come My Sunshine” rock confidently, and the big, slow chorus of “Now I’m a Spider” shows they can make with the pretty....full text

What happens when you have no expectations for a record at all? It seems impossible now. With so much information at our fingertips, it would make sense that there is no such thing as a bias-free approach to a new album. That's not to say that I didn't know anything about the Comas. I have their Conductor album and quite enjoyed it. I know that songwriter Andy Herod wrote the tracks on that album about his relationship and breakup with Michelle Williams, she of Dawson's Creek and Heath Ledger's seed incubator. I know they started out in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and have since relocated to New York City....full text
