With baby-boomers spending their hard-won 401K dollars on seeing touring dinosaurs like The Rolling Stones, it seems impossible to deny the allure of trying to recapture lost youth. Chicago band The Narrator exudes a smirky sarcasm on just about every front, from the nonsensical song titles to the often-esoteric lyrics to the non sequiturs in the liner notes. Lyrics like "Last week, I turned 25 / I can't believe that I'm still alive / I am so embarrassed," especially when paired with the terminally flat vocals, practically beg for Pavement comparisons—though musically, The Narrator hews closer to Archers Of Loaf's punk-derived indie rock....full text

With their infamously hectic live show and small catalog that's been tantalizing but spotty, I never thought the Narrator wanted to be just another above-average indie guitar band. I just figured they had yet to realize their ambitions on record. With All That to the Wall, however, the Narrator have indeed recorded an above-average indie guitar record, and in doing so have probably made their most cohesive and listenable full-length yet....full text
