| This Portland band's debut should satisfy those flummoxed and/or disappointed by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's sophomore slumper. Both groups capture early R.E.M.'s breezy jangle and give it a twisted sideways glance, but the Shaky Hands reduce the bark and play up the loose-limbed folk vibe, refusing to get bogged down in murky layers or sonic experiments....full text |

| You can't help but wonder about a band called the Shaky Hands. Are they a pack of boozehounds, fighting off the DTs the morning after? Are they just skittish bundles of frayed nerves? Doubtful. Judging by this Portland, Oregon-based quintet's infectious and ramshackle debut, the band members are trembling from their sheer enthusiasm for making music, like spirit-stricken born-agains at a revivalist tent meeting. Led by Castanets guitarist Nick Delffs, the Shaky Hands play loose, emphatic rock full of sing-song melodies. It's a blend of elegance and spontaneity that conjures early Pavement. | A friend who lives in Portland played The Shaky Hand’s self-released CD-R EP for me around the time it was released in 2004. Impressed by their songwriting skills – packaged in the same thick, nostalgic Pabst halo as this friend’s Polaroids – I made a point of seeing them two years later when they came through Davis. They played at a local pub notable only for its (short-lived) affiliation with the campus radio station and having "White Light/White Heat" on the jukebox....full text |
