MEG BAIRD - Dear Companion reviewAt the tail end of last year, Espers' Meg Baird released Leaves From Off the Tree, a collection of traditional English and Appalachian folk songs recorded in a trio with British singer Sharron Kraus and her Espers bandmate Helena Espvall. Casting aside Espers' baroque psychedelia and hushed electricity, Baird and her friends showcased a breathtaking affinity for this traditional material with their spare, homespun arrangements and bracing vocal harmonies. Greetings! How are things back at the old homestead? I was glad to hear from you and glad to hear that things are working out for you. I'm actually writing this letter to let you know about some music that I heard recently. It really had an impact on me and I'm sure it will on you. Remember the type of music we use to listen to back home? Whether it was on the radio, someone in the family or even someone from the neighborhood, the sound of one person singing with a guitar will always bring me back there. ...full text

Take away the "freak-" and the "psych-" from the oft-used descriptors of her other endeavor, Espers, and you're left with Meg Baird's folk-folk solo debut, Dear Companion. Peel away the gongs, doumbeks, dholaks, distortion, and the penchant for the mystical of her fellow Philadelphia collaborators and Baird is left with only a guitar, a beautiful voice, and traditional tales. (Oh, and a little dulcimer.) After all that taking away, we're left with an album of beautiful traditional and original songs that, while sparse, remind us why folk music requires us to slow down and listen: There is something to simplicity. ...full text
