I first saw Dan Deacon play live in August 2005, just after I moved to Baltimore. The occasion was a "bridging-the-gap" measure at a local loft space to foster unity between the city's art-damaged noise kids and its breakbeat-loving club kids. By the time I arrived, a balding, baby-fattened fellow with a patchy Brillo frizz of beard was unraveling a mess of electronics on a table in the middle of the dancefloor. My father, standing on Michigan State’s campus last summer during a banjo workshop, explained the sounds to a largely confused foreign student. Dan Deacon probably won’t ever strike anyone as a musician for the ages, but had he been born a century back in hilly Pennsylvania, it’s difficult to imagine him not ending up with a banjo on a porch, social, smiling, approachable. Instead, Deacon is a fixture on Baltimore’s burgeoning noise/pop scene, and the most visible member of the Wham City collective. | On first glance, Dan Deacon is the kind of dude you'd see working at that dingy video store in the forgotten part of town. He's medium height, slightly balding, wears oversized spiderman shirts that are completely threadbare and his green, plastic eyeglasses are held together with duct tape. His outfit is so outrageous that it starts out being slightly creepy…then you realize that maybe it's ironic, but in the end, no…it's mostly creepy....full text |
