This multimedia assault, though high on concept, is the most suc-cessful representation yet of Gang Gang Dance's kaleidoscopic, neo-primitive, post-punk clamor. Keyboardist and visual artist Brian DeGraw assembled the 24-minute CD and half-hour DVD from shows, soundchecks, practice tapes, field recordings, live video, tour footage, and newly shot abstract vignettes. As the title suggests, there's more than a bit of synesthesia in play: the pulsing, alien sounds on the CD (throbbing, as in gristle) suggest the style of the visuals, while the film's lulling edits merge with the music....full text |

| What to make of Gang Gang Dance's gorilla preoccupation? Retina Riddim sports three, while their CMJ set last fall saw Brian DeGraw stage left, a monkey staring off his shirt. There's the band's sincere initiative to start a sanctuary for primates, and the quotes DeGraw's given this site-- he imagines that gorillas "look at what we have done, how we have fucked up so many pure and beautiful things, and they just all make a pact to stay somewhat primitive, to keep existing in a more natural state....full text |

| Gang Gang Dance is similar to a girl-fronted, pop-oriented Sun City Girls. Both bands’ love of "world music" leaks into their work in a gloriously bastardized manner, as they use nonsensical chants to approximate foreign languages and snatch rhythm parts from overheard third-world jams. The similarities end there. Whereas SCG sometimes need an editor, GGD use the studio as a band member, stitching together performance elements to create the final product. ...full text |
