 Can we call a moratorium on using the phrase "rock artists getting into electronic music" as a pejorative, unless you're going to chuck out, I dunno, Sweet Exorcist or that guy who used to be in the Housemartins or dozens of other beloved post-rave producers? Simian Mobile Disco were as deep in rock as a pair of quarrymen, even if you'd never know it to listen to this record. James Ford and James Shaw got their start in workman-like indie four-piece Simian, lost to the discount bins had SMD not branched sideways into success in the populist end of dance. ...full text |

| You probably already know of Simian Mobile Disco, but for all the wrong reasons. The dance group rose out of the ashes of indie psych-rock group Simian, whose 2002 song “We Are Your Friends” got remixed by techno-maestro’s Justice just this last year. The video for that song (featuring a guy getting a cat thrown at him in slow motion, amidst other craziness) won Best Video at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2006, leading a tipsy Kanye West to rush on stage and launch into an infamous rant about how his video should have won—an event that was very well publicized after the fact....full text |

Artists desperate to create interest in their product will release singles, leak tracks, post demos, and willfully give their freshest beats to compilations months before their album actually hits shelves, all for the sake of momentum. These tactics can create sustained buzz, which marketing heads hope will equate to record sales, or they can end up cannibalizing the very project they were intended to promote, basically giving away all the milk before they can sell the cow. ...full text |
