Metric is a leading light of Toronto's Broken Social Scene circle these days, but the band was far different when it recorded its first album, Grow Up And Blow Away, in 2001. Instead of the guitar-heavy foursome familiar on the recent Live It Out, Metric was a trip-hoppy duo comprising only singer Emily Haines and guitarist James Shaw. Metric's record label folded before Grow Up could be released, and by the time the band members found a new one, their style had changed so much that they shelved it in favor of the more-representative material on 2003's Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? Grow Up shouldn't be dismissed as juvenilia or a collection of discarded experiments, though....full text |

| Metric has been around for quite awhile now. Formed in New York as a two piece in 1998 by vocalist Emily Haines and guitarist James Shaw, the band spent much of its early years toiling around at first in the New York scene with acts such as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Liars and then in the London club scene, where they did not manage to grab a major foothold. Eventually returning back to America, Metric recorded their debut album, Grow Up and Blow Away in 2001, but because of problems with the record label problems (the band's original label, Restless was purchased by Rykodisc) the album never saw the light of day. Now six years later, Last Gang records, (Metric's new label) is opening the vault and re-releasing the ten track album, and it just might be Metric's best....full text |

| OK, so Grow Up And Blow Away isn't a new album, but $5 says that most of you had never even heard of the band Metric when it was a new record. I'll be honest, I didn't know about them until 2003's Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? came out. As a fan I was pretty psyched to find out that the band was releasing Grow Up And Blow Away, as it was previously only available on the road and somewhere online back in the day....full text |
