 Mercury Rev keyboardist Justin Russo casts another spell with his bewitching side project, The Silent League. Building on the lush, orchestral beauty of their 2006 debut, Russo and his seven-strong band layer harmonies and easy melodies reminiscent of the Eagles in the decorative brass, synths, bass and cello. But beneath this sweet trifle of sounds lie heavy-hearted lyrics that suggest Russo may be embroiled in a mid-life crisis, struggling to reconcile what he wanted with what he's got. "You're too old for rock'n'roll and too young to give up," he sings in Let It Roll. His music, too, has reached an impasse, with each lullaby seeping into the next. The unexplained hiatus since the release of their critically lauded debut, The Orchestra, Sadly, Has Refused in 2005, had led to rumours of a split, and sightings of some of its number appearing with alt-country staples like Calexico and Beirut only added to the mystery of where this most beguiling of chamber-pop groups had shuffled off to....full text |

| Any album sleeve that gives thanks to someone called Pinky Weitzman is cool, and makes us wish we had more interesting friends (sorry, Dave). And anyone who was involved in Mercury Rev's 'All Is Dream' album is alright by NME too. So, perhaps NME's alt.cardigan got snagged or something, because this second album from sometime Rev noodler Justin Russo just seems less, er, alt. than we'd hoped....full text |
