Good golly Ms. Polly. You sure like to bawl.
White Chalk, the eighth album by the only good thing to come out of Dorset not high in bad cholesterol, and the first since 2004's Uh Huh Her, is not a happy thing. In fact, if you were being totally accurate, you might say it was a bleak, weeping shell of a thing, dripping with the kind of sexual tension you usually only get when hooking yourself up to a Van der Graaf machine in nylon underpants....full text |

| If there's been a constant in Polly Jean Harvey's 15-year career it's that she seems uncomfortable in her own skin-- which may explain why she sheds it so often. Harvey has a penchant for self-correction, to an almost compulsive degree: After To Bring You My Love made her a marquee act, Harvey released the dark, more atmospheric Is This Desire?
