 The hardest part of writing reviews is starting. I like to start with an abstract idea that relates to the music and segue my way into more meticulous description. Formulaic? Maybe, but it has proven effective. Often times, my ideas for the starting of a review comes like a wave of realization whilst listening to the album, but when I listen to Jimmy Eat World’s Chase This Light, all I can do is bob my head and enjoy the music. Oddly enough, this is not due to a lack of emotion or musicianship from the band, or poor songwriting, but rather the mood of the music. Chase This Light is the band’s final evolution into pop rock, almost completely abandoning their beginnings as an emo band....full text |

| Having first blazed down the teary-eyed emo trail in 1999, Jimmy Eat World keeps successfully tapping into the teenage angst-ridden pop/punk market five albums in. "Chase This Light" finds the band returning to the more accelerated power pop of 2001's "Bleed American" rather than the darker tone heard throughout 2004's "Futures." With Butch Vig producing, there is an extra coat of studio sheen on anthemic rockers ("Big Casino"), finger-snapping dance-y numbers ("Always Be") and such borderline Fall Out Boy-sounding political shout-outs as "Electable (Give It Up)....full text |

| After exploring some murkier territory with Futures and the brooding Stay on My Side Tonight EP, Jimmy Eat World have returned with a brighter, more pop-infused sound on Chase This Light. That approach, of course, isn't exactly a new one for the Arizona outfit - Bleed American, the band's 2001 commercial breakthrough, offered one indelible hook after another. Although Chase This Light boasts a number of catchy songs that could generate a radio-play resurgence for the band, it lacks the eclecticism and sustained urgency that permeates their best work....full text |
