| | Subba-cultcha | It's been a long two years since Nine Black Alps released their début album to great critical acclaim, but now they're back with Love/Hate, their sophomore effort. Thankfully, the long wait doesn't appear to have been a symptom of Difficult Second Album Syndrome.
Nine Black Alps' first album, Everything Is, was seemingly fuelled by a sense of sullen rage – that directionless fury at a world which makes no sense that prompts kids in their mid-teens to slam their bedroom doors. Love/Hate still burgeons with youthful angst and confusion, as its title suggests, but the glowering atmosphere has given way to something more forthright and plain spoken. If Everything Is was the sound of a hunch-shouldered sulk, then Love/Hate is the sound of someone standing up straight and explaining exactly what it is that has pissed them off....full text |
| | BBC | If ever a band were never going to live up to expectation, it was Nine Black Alps. Despite sounding like a bunch of teens trying to be Nirvana, the band caused one of the biggest feeding frenzies that Manchester has ever seen when they got signed a few years back.
Hailed as everything from the saviours of post-rock to kings of their home-town, they proceeded to release a debut, Everything Is, that was - rather unsurprisingly - sturdy, enjoyable but utterly derivative....full text |
