Angels & Airwaves - I-Empire
| Billboard | | Tom Delonge isn't the first rocker to conclude that love is all you need—but with Angels & Airwaves, it just takes him a little longer than others to actually say that. Like 2006's "We Don't Need to Whisper," "I-Empire" is a sweeping conceptual piece with a message as big as its sound and just a bit more enigmatic. If "Whisper" was about leaving one world and finding another, "I-Empire" focuses on not only living in that new realm but also mastering it. Musically, the band demonstrates a better grip on dynamics, thanks partly to the locked-in rhythm section of drummer Adam "Atom" Willard and new bassist Matt Wachter....full text |
| | Avclub | | Angels And Airwaves frontman Tom DeLonge has a lot in common with R&B egomaniac R. Kelly: No one can discuss Kelly lately without debating whether he takes himself seriously, and ever since DeLonge released his band's overly ambitious debut, 2006's We Don't Need To Whisper, many have wondered the same about him. Yet even those who initially scoffed at the former Blink-182 leader couldn't deny that, like Kelly, the guy can occasionally write one hell of a song. On Whisper, it was the arena-ready single "The Adventure"; on the mostly winning follow-up I-Empire, it's "Everything's Magic," a strummy, Police-like anthem that should blare out of high-school parking lots the world over. "Magic" isn't the sole highlight: "Sirens," an earnest new-wave throwback, may even encourage DeLonge's sternest critics to sing along....full text |

He holds onto his beliefs long after other men would abandon them, cherishing them with the obstinate fervor of a teenager even though he's long past adolescence. Others would have buckled at the lukewarm, occasionally mocking reception of his post-blink-182 project Angels & Airwaves and their 2006 debut, We Don't Need to Whisper, but instead of revamping the group for their quickly recorded sophomore effort, I-Empire -- who knows whether the title is either a pun on Apple's iCulture or a reflection of DeLonge's never-ending quest of self-improvement -- he digs in his heels, refusing to budge from his oddly misconstrued Cure and U2 amalgam.
