Super Furry Animals - Hey Venus!

Sometime or the other, Super Furry Animals decided to follow the route of many successful acts and get very experimental with their music. They were always a band that knew how to write great, memorable music but wanted to prove that they could be a bit “more serious” and still hold onto their initial charm and humor. Albums like Rings Around the World and Phantom Power were as ambitious and unique as anything else the Furries had otherwise achieved. And though they were critical successes, it was always inevitable that they would find their way back to making an album showcasing their strength at writing perfect pop songs. Not as aggressively experimental as 1999's "Guerrilla" or 2005's "Love Kraft," the latest from this genre-bending Welsh band is largely a smoothed-out pop record, reining in some of Super Furry Animals' more left-field tendencies and tenderly nurturing the catchy, chart-friendly hooks of Gruff Rhys and company. "Run Away" is an uptempo number about amnesia and desertion, but it's not as representative of the record as the nuanced "The Gift That Keeps Giving," where the group's penchant for sonic flourishes is used to subtle effect....full text

They've got a new producer and a new home, but Super Furry Animals' eighth album sees the Welsh wonders reclaiming their bubbly pop past. Here the band play to their strengths with a new, light, touch: Hey Venus! is stuffed full of sublime melodies, catchy choruses and vivid pyschedelia. The songs are linked by the tale of a small-town girl (the Venus of the title) lusting after the bright lights and finding fleeting fame in the big city.
