In the arts, youth and accidental excellence go hand in hand. There's something liberating about not knowing the rules of the game, and that, coupled with the hubris of young adulthood, often results in premature works of brilliance. That's probably why buzz bands are thriving these days but sustained artistic growth remains elusive for most of them. The debut album from MGMT -- a pair of hotshot twentysomethings based in Brooklyn -- sounds like a college-dorm experiment gone horribly right. So many other electro-pop duos have tried mixing such volatile elements as glam rock, disco, and new wave, and they've failed miserably. Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, however, succeed because they treat this record as if it's their only shot at glory. Opener "Time to Pretend" is both an overblown manifesto and living will wrapped up in one tidy package. ...full text |

| When MGMT (pronounced "management") was asked by their record label for a list of their dream producers, with low expectations they sarcastically replied: Prince, Nigel Godrich, Barrack Obama, and "not Sheryl Crow." Columbia returned with Dave Fridmann, the producer extraordinaire best known for his work with Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. In typical Fridmann fashion, Oracular Spectacular is a glamorous mega-production through and through. Drums are massively distorted and shimmering keyboards are articulately layered as he takes the reigns, leading the duo through his daisy chain of onboard compressors, delay units, and whatever other mysterious studio gizmos and gadgets he uses to get his trademark sound....full text |

| Joining fellow hotly tipped Brooklyn bands Vampire Weekend and Yeasayer, MGMT (pronounced "management") merits just as much attention for its psychedelic experimentation as it does for its melodies and hooks. As produced by Dave Fridmann, the group's major-label debut never takes itself too seriously.
