The handsome gloss of strings on much of “Watershed” can only do so much to brighten the mood. K. D. Lang, who produced the album herself, has clearly spent some recent time answering the call of melancholy. This is her first collection of new material in eight years, and its atmosphere, luxurious and doleful, reflects a state of heavy contemplation.
