Review : Yoav - Charmed & Strange
AmazonHe sings into his guitar, slaps it around quite a bit and you wouldn't be entirely surprised if he happened to throw it down and stomp on it with his bare feet. Born in Israel, raised in South Africa and now splitting his time between Montreal and London, Yoav isn't quite like other singer-songwriters.
He counts Timbaland and the Neptunes as major influences and spends as much time coaxing funky rhythms out of his battered acoustic guitar as he does strumming it. He won over Tori Amos' fans after supporting her on tour, which makes sense....full text
BostonAt first listen, you may mistake Yoav for a DJ, but there are no turntables or synthesizers - it's just a man and his guitar. Yoav creates a pseudo backup band by looping his voice and guitar to pulse his music forward. GuardianBusiness as usual for pub glam's Peter Pans, whose youthful zing remains despite their music having long descended into stodge. Their sixth collection is broad, bouncy and almost entirely forgettable. Sure, they're channelling T. Rex, which is better than the morbid fumbling of 2005's Road to Rouen, but with 'Mansize Rooster' still echoing 13 years after its release, we expect more....full text
