Though it doesn't happen often enough, a solid belly laugh can warm an audience up to all of a singer's moods. It takes a certain balance of humility, confidence, and playfulness, and Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy grows into that on Colin Meloy Sings Live!, recorded at eight solo acoustic shows in 2006. Without a full band around him, Meloy projects his voice and lets his guitar sparkle and chime, doing greater justice to his ear for folk-y essentials. Clear away the harmonies, drums, and keys, and "On The Bus Mall" gets new life as an aching epic....full text |

| From a prejudiced perspective, Colin Meloy’s debut solo and live album should perhaps have come with a subtitle like ‘For The Fans Only’, given that it finds him playing without the complimentary carnivalesque backing of The Decemberists (to soften the impact of his Marmite-like nasal tones) and given that his choice of material is decidedly divorced from much of the signature Decemberists songbook entries (there are no ‘hits’ like “16 Military Wives” or “O Valencia!” for starters). However, Meloy’s tenacious artistic ambition isn’t designed for quick and easy routing anyway. Lest we forget that The Decemberists’ major-label - 2006’s The Crane Wife - found the band deploying not one, but two, 10+ minute prog-rock-shaped epics alongside breezy yet wordy pop songs. ...full text |

| The title of this solo, acoustic tour LP is accurate, yet potentially misleading. It conjures images of a white-tuxedoed lounge singer, voice as smooth as good vermouth, working through the standards with intimate asides and PG-rated innuendos on the side. It's funny to imagine Meloy as such a character, because he's essentially the opposite: self-conscious and bookish instead of blithe and effortlessly cool. The vocal interpreter sets love stories amid contemporary urban centers; Meloy orchestrates romantic tragedies in exotic period locales....full text |
