 A year in the making, following his critically acclaimed (and free for download) attack on materialism, Over the Counter Culture, Tim Fite continues expanding on his musical process, in which he treats the sounds in his head like construction paper as he cuts, pastes, and stacks notes and noises to build musical collages. While the last album mixed white-boy hip-hop and folk with a kaleidoscope of samples to earn quick comparisons to Mellow Gold-era Beck, Fair Ain't Fair has the feel of Tom Waits songs performed by the Eels and produced by a Grandaddy and Wyclef tag team....full text |

| Had things turned out differently, Tim Fite would have made a pretty convincing cult leader. That’s a weird compliment to pay, but Fite is a weird guy. There is a charismatic mystery about him, equal parts mythology and absurdity: he is said to live in a graveyard, he is said to have been born without blood, he calls himself “the gentleman with itchy legs” for some reason… that kind of thing. He doesn’t take himself overly seriously, but he has this fascinating alternate morality that makes his songs feel latently spiritual, a mastery of illogic that makes tautologies and contradictions – “fair ain’t fair,” for starters – sound like important truths....full text |

It's a shame Vaudeville died out nearly half a century before Tim Fite was born: He would have been a natural.
The Brooklyn musician sings, he raps, he plays instruments, uses samples from obscure bargain-bin records and has been known to wear seersucker pants, with matching suspenders, pulled up well past his waist. Fite also has a searing wit and a strong sense of irony, which he combined to brilliant effect on last year's scathing take-down of rampant consumerism, "Over the Counter Culture."
