 Some people hate N.E.R.D., and I don’t know why. Maybe the concept of respecting something you don’t enjoy is foreign to them, especially when that Billionaire Boys Club kid Pharrell is involved. To many, their schizophrenic style seems forced (if not fake). Were N.E.R.D. trying too hard to be all things to all people? Not exactly. Though their brand of mushy, multi-?genre melodious funk does have a place in the mainstream, the Neptunes’ outsourced productions always made a larger mark on the masses. | Back in high school, I knew a girl who saw musical notes as colors in her mind. Scientists call this neurological phenomenon "synesthesia," where one sensation involuntarily stimulates a completely different one. It's this phenomenon that inspired N.E.R.D.'s third album, Seeing Sounds, the idea of which was to create a record with their visual live act in mind. | While writing their third album, N.E.R.D. watched a Discovery Channel show about synesthesia, a neurological disorder that causes people to experience sounds as colors or as objects in their minds. Superproducers the Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo) and their rapping buddy Shay Haley were inspired to create music you could envision as a live show. Does that creative concept work?
