If they're not singing about girls that are on fire, or writing ecstatically happy pop songs about having obsessive compulsive disorder, they're throwing in clichés like "if you've got to go, then you've got to go" in the lead up to the chorus of No Contest - not to mention the fact that the actual chorus basically consists of "Woo! The dizzy, euphoric racket is occasionally brought earthward by lyrics that hint at darker troubles, such as the addled rock star of Pieces and frequent references to fracturing relationships. You can toil over a song for months, tweaking sound and structure, toying with melody, but if any of this effort is obvious the listener feels oddly deflated. Delays surely know this, pop connoisseurs that they are, and have pulled the trick off twice, with their astonishingly lovely, painfully overlooked early singles "Nearer Than Heaven" and "Long Time Coming". So it's genuinely sad to note that "Everything's The Rush" sounds a little too much like hard work....full text |
