| When G. Love & Special Sauce released their self-titled debut in 1994, the Philadelphia trio created a distinctive new recipe for beat-driven summer chill-out music. "Superhero Brother" demonstrates further seasoning, as frontman/songwriter Garrett "G. Love" Dutton adds reflections on politics and fatherhood to his unique and variable hip-hop/blues formula that otherwise pays tribute to funk music, weed and blueberry pie. Bright guitar hooks, expansive piano and Jimi "Jazz" Prescott's driving bass create tracks like "Wiggle Worm" and "Georgia Brown" that are as engrossing as they are stress-reducing. | It's unlikely that anyone's more surprised by how long G. Love has managed to stick around than G. Love himself. The funky Philadelphian (born Garrett Dutton) first appeared on the national radar in 1994 with the MTV hit "Cold Beverage" -- a laid-back fusion of blues licks and hip-hop beats -- and since then, he and his backing band, Special Sauce, have built a devoted audience. ....full text |

| Superhero Brother sees G. Love & Special Sauce pulling back on the guest appearances from their last two albums and just focusing on the core group, now including Mark Boyce on keys. They still cover a lot of bases musically, from the classic rock moves of "Communication" to the New Orleans second-line rhythm on the chorus of "Peace, Love and Happiness." A bit of beatboxing introduces "What We Need," while "Wontcha Come Home" almost sounds like an old Paul Simon song. Then there are the more tender tracks, like "Grandmother" and "Soft and Sweet." The smirking "Wiggle Worm" is destined to become a concert favorite, while "City Livin'" recalls the '70s with punchy horns and groovy guitar. There's certainly nothing new about G. Love's "forget your troubles, listen to my music and just feel good" gospel, but this time out some of the songs seem a bit formulaic....full text |
