This Ohio-based emo-rock outfit has spent the time since 2006's "If Only You Were Lonely" dealing with drama considerably heavier than what most emo bands sing about. Hawthorne Heights sued (and was subsequently countersued by) its label, Victory, for breach of contract (since resolved); then, late last year, guitarist Casey Calvert died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs on the group's tour bus. Not surprisingly, on "Fragile Future," HH finds comfort in the familiar, with frontman J.T. Woodruff layering catchy (if slightly worn-sounding) vocal melodies over stop-and-start guitar chug that never gets too fuzzy for the Hot Topic set....full text

Fragile Future is Hawthorne Heights' first effort without Casey Calvert, whose shrieking vocals helped establish the band as one of the only platinum-selling outfits in the screamo genre. And given their situation, it's quite hard to criticize Hawthorne Heights for playing dark, nocturnal emo-rock songs, since few of their contemporaries have such an authentic reason for sounding depressed....full text

Just what are emo bands so depressed about? Being a young rock star making shit-tons of money—when did that become a source of angst? As such, it's hard to take most of them seriously, but Hawthorne Heights unfortunately earned its distress after screamer-guitarist Casey Calvert died last November from a fatal interaction of prescription drugs. Calvert's full-throated bark made the band the most successful screamo outfit out there, but that's all in the past for Fragile Future, an album that plunks the band back in the rest of the punk-pop pack. Guitarist J.T. Woodruff has assumed all vocals duties, and his nasally whine is virtually indistinguishable from the hordes of similar sounding emo frontmen; that and disappointingly bland hooks make Fragile Future feel formulaic....full text
