 Cisco Adler, leader of Los Angeles sleaze rockers Whitestarr, is famous for his well-connected dad (producer Lou Adler), ex-girlfriends (like Mischa Barton) and his ballsy nude photo, which leaked online last year. His newest hobby is producing tracks (and an MTV reality show) for 22-year-old Malibu chill-hop rapper Shwayze, whose breezy flow is a hybrid of Young MC and Digable Planets' Butterfly. Adler's no beat master, and the tracks on Shwayze all sound like variations on thumb-strummed Jack Johnson tunes, topped with Sugar Ray-style rhymes about weed and women....full text |

| The self-titled debut by Malibu "chill-hop" newcomer Shwayze is the aural equivalent of an episode of Entourage. Obsessed with babes, blunts, and beaches, it's relentlessly and proudly shallow, content to promote no agenda beyond having a good time with the brahs. It's a snapshot of a lifestyle that's envied by some and hated by more, which means the burden is on Shwayze to prove he's worthy of admiration. Unfortunately, Shwayze is remarkable only in how unremarkable it is. More of the blame for the album's mediocrity falls on the production, which comes courtesy of Cisco Adler, who's known more for the skanks he's boned (and perhaps for the MTV reality series Buzzin', starring him and Shwayze) than the music he's produced and made with the band Whitestarr....full text |

| "I'm brown like a blunt," Shwayze reports on opening track "Roamin'," and it's a stellar summary. The 23-year-old Malibu rapper's debut is as shallow as a spray-on tan; it's stocked with bro'd-out, giggly rhymes about 420-filled nights and T&A aplenty over lazy, midtempo beats from producer/reality-show rocker Cisco Adler. The tunnel vision and less-than-Sublime singing bores halfway -- but even if Shwayze does cash out early, his chill vibe is perfectly reflective of 2 a.m. bonfires and joyrides down the PCH....full text |
