Having recorded three definitive modern power-pop albums with 1991's classic Girlfriend and its two follow-ups, Altered Beast and 100% Fun, in one of the most extraordinary runs of the '90s, Matthew Sweet set an awfully high bar for himself. So the singer-songwriter has spent much of this decade sidestepping expectations that he'd come up with another essential power-pop record with a series of comparatively mellow albums, such as 2004's Living Things and his side projects with the Thorns and Susana Hoffs. That his recent output has still been of high quality makes it a bit problematic to call Sunshine Lies a return to form, but that's nonetheless what the album feels like....full text

It's not the savviest 2008 career strategy to play immaculately executed '60s and '70s power pop, but few do it better than Matthew Sweet. Yoking fuzz-stoked guitars (credit Television vet Richard Lloyd) to gorgeous melodies derived from the Beatles and Big Star, Sweet serves up his best tunes since Altered Beast. If the chiming "Byrdgirl" doesn't have David Crosby wiping away happy tears, he's using again. "Flying" kicks like Crazy Horse without the mistakes. And "Feel Fear" is a ballad so timeless it could've been a radio hit during any decade in the past 40 years (except this one)....full text

For somebody who played a large role in reviving guitar-driven power pop in the '90s, Matthew Sweet spent a good chunk of the new millennium avoiding the six-string. Apart from 2003's Japanese love letter Kimi Ga Suki * Raifu, Sweet walked on the soft side in the years since 1997's Blue Sky on Mars, crafting psychedelic song cycles, Beach Boys tributes, and an album of sweet duets with Susanna Hoffs. Sunshine Lies returns the guitar to the center, pushing the playing of Greg Leisz, Ivan Julian, Richard Lloyd, and Sweet to the front and relying on arrangements that feel lean even when they're each graced with subtle flourishes of layered, overdubbed harmonies, Mellotrons, and backward tapes....full text
