Poor old The Bloody Automatic. Cursed with the ability to squeeze out club, terrace and playground-razing earworms like golden goose eggs, and all they wanted to do was be a proper serious hardcore band. Particularly so former screamo-yelping lynchpin Alex Pennie, who, after his band hit the peak of their GMTV-trashing, cabbie-pleasing fame on the back of the ubiquitous ‘Monster’, was to be heard grumbling, “When you’re in a band you don’t think that in a year you’re going to be on a TV show with these dicks from Big Brother being all cool,” and sodding off on tour with Frank Carter....full text |

| It’s easy to feel sorry for The Automatic, their careers made and then destroyed by a single, huge hit. But then it’s easy to not feel sorry for them at all, too. That hit has propelled them into the nation’s consciousness - a position that many bands would give their right arms for - and the criticism levelled at their debut album (that it was pretty much the same song on repeat) was well-founded....full text |

| Having spent the past two years touring their first album, the Automatic have delivered a second record that is full of the sort of insights that only occur to songwriters when they realise they're wasting their lives shuttling between promo junkets. So, the insight on Magazines is that magazines lie; on Bad Guy, it's that Hollywood lies; on Accessories, it's that the record industry lies. Just when you're feeling grateful that they haven't written a song about how the government lies, Responsible Citizen arrives to tackle the binge-drinking argument, only to capitulate with the gruesomely clumsy: "Some people should not partake/ Sometimes it's a big mistake." Elsewhere, the Welsh four-piece are merely witless. Utterly awful....full text |
