 James Lavelle's proyecto mayor has paired him with some greats in the past; ranging from DJ Shadow to Massive Attack. This alone sets a standard of quality in UNKLE's production—and their new album, titled End Titles...Stories for Film, lives up to this quality in odd, but clear ways.
A compilation of stacked songs recorded by UNKLE over the past two years that were inspired by the moving image, it is like a soundtrack that belongs to no particular film. As Lavelle says, "There is room for everything in this kind of collection, from classical all the way to beat-driven instrumentals and electronic rock." | Exactly a decade ago, "Psyence Fiction", the debut album from Mo' Wax label boss James Lavelle and his then musical partner DJ Shadow, stood as one of the most hyped and anticipated records of the day. Ten years on, the same can't be said for "End Titles…Stories For Film". While the likes of Thom Yorke, Richard Ashcroft and Ian Brown, whose vocal presence made "Psyence Fiction" the event it was, have either retained their standing or been elevated to gods, UNKLE's status dwindled to that of niche players whose records existed primarily for the entertainment of their makers....full text |

| Not quite the fourth proper UNKLE full-length, End Titles...Stories for Film is a collection of tracks taken from the shelf (or elsewhere) after the completion of War Stories in 2007. Since UNKLE were abundantly busy during that short span of time, the album certainly has the potential for greatness. It includes several pieces of soundtrack work from Odyssey in Rome (a documentary that focused on director Abel Ferrara and the making of his film Mary) as well as UNKLE's BMW advert hit "Trouble in Paradise (Variations on a Theme)." But End Titles...Stories for Film wears the signs of its creation poorly, unlike the quite-good odds'n'sods collection More Stories, which despite its high quality was released only in Australia....full text |
