So Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down commences with a dancing acoustic guitar and some handclaps, which give way to a hurried Charlie Fink (lead singer, not the greeting card dude) reciting in a beautifully arid tone: “Last night I dreamt we were inseparably entwined / One piece of rope made out of two pieces of vine,” and you know where this is headed. Fink protests 30 seconds later “I’m not trying to write a love song,” but he’s full of shit. This is— as you’d expect it to be—a folksy incarnation of the Magnetic Fields, sweet in its sincerity, sardonic in its undertones....full text |

It is, it would seem, perfectly possible to have too much of a good thing. Or at least to have a good thing too often, so that by the time you get all of it in one go, you've had so many small chunks over the past year that you're just a little bit fed up with it and the novelty has worn off.
So it is with Noah And The Whale. Good as they are, weeks of radio play, four singles - of which only two are present here - and a Sunday Times Best Of Indie giveaway have, sadly, dulled their appeal. This is a shame as they have a lot going for them: a less ironic Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly; a less nutso Jim Noir; a cheerier Will Oldham; a more English Handsome Family... these things should knit together perfectly and in the most part, they do....full text |

| Sweet and sour: the oldest trick in the book. Just ask Uncle Ben. And if soft-hearted London folkies Noah And The Whale aren’t quite as deft with savoury rice, they’ve got the knack of balancing heart-melting, pupil-dilating ditties with words of chill bleakness down pat. Take ‘Jocasta’: not since Elbow crooned “I’ll be the corpse in your bathtub” in your ear has such a disturbing opening line as “When the baby’s born/Let’s turn it to the snow” been uttered so charmingly.
