The anatomy of the Sugababes album remains the same regardless of line-up changes – upbeat, killer singles at the start, some lightweight soul ballads in the middle and a big torch song at the end. As ever, though, they've tweaked the formula and this time around there's a wonderful 60s girl group shimmy and Motown beat to the opening salvo of Girls, You On A Good Day and No Can Do - all managing to feel retro and modern simultaneously. After the sassy Destiny's Child style Side Chick the magic fades which makes the closing Can We Call A Truce all the more powerful. Luckily it's the album stand-out. The other great song here is another attempt at sardonic social commentary; well-meaning it may well be but the call and response in Never Miss A Beat of "What do you want for tea? I want crisps" is like a singing version of one of those patronising Jamie Oliver-teaching-us-common-people-to-eat-asparagus cookery shows. Irritating, but like much of Off With Their Heads, damn catchy....full text |
