A-ha - Analogue

Something about this third single from recent LP Talkie Walkie might sound slightly familiar. Not for lack of originality - this is as quirky and intriguing as anything the Gallic duo have ever dreamt up - but thanks to a long-running mobile phone advert which used the whistled melody as its signature. As the full track unfolds some brilliant little touches are revealed, including twangy spaghetti-Western guitars and what sounds like a filtered helicopter blade fluttering away behind the beats - all helping to scrub away that stubborn ad grime and lend our ears something fresh....full text

Air release ‘Alpha Beta Gaga’ with Mark Ronson remixes on the single to make for an interesting collaboration. Cool cat Mark Ronson has propelled to fame recently and is an excellent producer. The original ‘Alpha Beta Gaga’ single featured on their recent album ‘Talkie Walkie’ has been beefed up by Ronson, hitting harder on the beats and giving the single a bit of funk. It’s dancier and less complicated. Rhymefest features raps on one version that is well done but is truly surprising to think someone could rap to Air. We have Mark Ronson to thank for that....full text

Norwegian New Wave trio A-ha haven't stopped slogging away since their Eighties heyday, although new album Analogue, from which this single is taken, has the feel of a comeback thanks to some particularly eager marketing. Morten Harket's unmistakable vocals can't fail to taint the song with a dated Eighties vibe, and although the glossy Bryan Adams-esque chorus attempts something akin to "contemporary", the end result is a little underwhelming. Still, the production is polished and the musicianship as accomplished as you'd expect from such old hands, so fans are unlikely to be disappointed. Expect another surge of press interest around the film release of The Da Vinci Code, for which A-ha have provided the track Celice....full text

A-ha burst on the British scene in 1985 with their comic-book video'd "Take On Me", and they're one of the most internationally loved bands in pop, years later.

Analogue is a mature collection of songs, carefully produced and arranged. They're at their best at their darkest: the title track is the standout with its steady guitar-piano riff breaking out into uplifting choruses. Strings feature across the board: "A Fine Blue Line" blends them with electronics and "Over the Treetops" with vocal harmonies, incorporating fuzz guitar... The trick they have mastered is balancing all synthetic and acoustic elements within dramatic structures.

Bonus track "The Summers of Our Youth" begins with Magne Furuholmen almost cocking a snook to Chris Martin by taking on a rather similar singing style, before returning to Morten's familiar falsetto. A-ha must realise they're the original, and the finest. Keane and Coldplay, get your coats....full text
