The tauntingly-named Starfucker is a Portland trio helmed by chief songwriter Josh Hedges, who previously performed with the band Sexton Blake. While Hedges' former outfit was more of a somber indie group that relied on melancholic beats and gloomy lyrics, his current project, assembled in the summer of 2007, expresses and altogether new direction and temperament. Little wonder, as Hedges formed Starfucker after a ten-day meditation retreat in Thailand, an experience that proved most challenging, according to Hedges himself, when suppressing the urge to masturbate. Returning to the Pacific Northwest, Hedges partnered with Portland natives Ryan Biornstad and Shawn Glassford to round out the band. With the additional musical influence of new friends, Hedges' music is certainly more lively and cheerful than in the past, as he now appears to be appreciating the little things in life, such as rhythmic beats, colorful synths, and light, but funky lyrics....full text |

| Profane band names are the kind of things that either make sense or don’t. Take, for example, the Butthole Surfers—to this day, still known as “BH Surfers” among TV and radio stations wary of the long arm of the FCC. It’s an amusingly crass name, and works decently as preparation for the dark psychedelics and noisy metal indulgences of the group’s ‘80s output (who knows where “Pepper” came from). Or how about Smegma, a collective of experimental musicians—I’d like to think the name is a cheeky acquiescence to the lack of commercial prospects. Starfucker, however, only makes sense as a third-grade prank on indie-pop, which, oddly enough, is what the group’s self-titled debut ends up sounding like. The music is neither confrontational nor without commercial prospects, while the lyrics eschew any grotesqueries for sing-along chants like “she / won’t have / a thing / to do / with me.”...full text |

| Electronic-tinged indie pop trio Starfucker is not nearly as threatening as their name suggests; they are, after all, an electronic-tinged indie pop trio. “Friendly” may even be an apt description of their music, the kind of stuff you wouldn’t feel embarrassed to put on around Mom and Pop. One would not be surprised to hear if none of the members had ever even heard of Trent Reznor, or the song he had written nearly a decade hence using their namesake. On Starfucker’s self-titled debut, breezy melodies coalesce with whimsical synth hooks, anchoring basslines, and simple drum patterns meant to elicit clap-alongs. The record never reaches a level of intensity or shock that the simple act of repeating the band’s name can take an unsuspecting conversational partner to. However, after the initial shock of, well, not being shocked settles down, you’ll find that Starfucker has crafted a solid, catchy, well-produced pop record that should have the hooks and emotional resonance to compete with most indie-rock contemporaries for lovesick teenagers’ iPod disc space. Downloaded copies of the Red Album will not stand a chance....full text |
