Mark Kozelek - The Finally LP reviewark Kozelek can take you from Modest Mouse to Leonard Bernstein in the span of a few songs. He can also trace the entire arc of a love affair in four minutes, the details so vivid (the color of the walls, what you can see out the windows, the ocean that churns while you sleep) that you feel like you've experienced them yourself.

So it was par excellance last night (Nov. 12) during a solo acoustic show at Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg, as Kozelek shifted seamlessly from left-field covers (AC/DC's "Riff Raff," Stephen Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns," Simon & Garfunkel's "I Am a Rock") to gems from throughout his Red House Painters, Sun Kil Moon and solo catalogs....full text

Despite the fact that he’s capable of crafting quietly ear-stunned original records of bleakly radiant acoustic introspection or moving, Crazy Horse-inspired rock, one of Mark Kozelek’s greatest gifts as a musician and performer is his ability to reinterpret other songwriter’s material and blending it into his aural world of gentle sepia beauty. Unfortunately—with the exception of the excellent AC/DC acoustic covers record What’s Next to the Moon (2001) and the Sun Kil Moon takes on Modest Mouse that is Tiny Cities (2005)—most of these covers have been scattered throughout various compilations, both in-and out-of-print, and left to the purview of hardcore collectors. The Finally LP aims to rectify this, culling ten cover songs originally written for children’s shows, benefits and tribute albums, as well as wholly unreleased material, such as Kozelek’s cover of “Celebrated Summer,” as well as a handfull of unreleased instrumentals. And yes, diehards, there’s even a cover of AC/DC’s “If You Want Blood,” just for old time’s sake....full text

Over the years Mark Kozelek of Sun Kil Moon and his earlier band, Red House Painters, has gained well deserved praise for his extraordinary songwriting. At the same time he has developed a parallel reputation for his unique covers of other people’s material. Many of these tracks were recorded for tribute albums that are now unavailable. Caldo Verde Records has now collected them in a cohesive, 10-song LP titled ‘The Finally LP’. It is set for release December 9, 2008.

Highlights include a country tinged version of ‘Lazy’ by Low, ‘Bedtime Lullaby’ from the children’s show Yo Gabba Gabba!, and an intimate, acoustic version Stephen Sondhiem’s ‘Send In The Clowns’ recorded for the Minneapolis Bridge Disaster Benefit CD. The album also includes radio show rarities, a previously unreleased version of Husker Dü’s ‘Celebrated Summer’ and two previously unreleased original instrumentals...full text
