White Zombie - Let Sleeping Corpses Lie

   Music.ign
November 26, 2008 - White Zombie has always been a bit of an oddball outfit. Some purists may question the band's metal credentials, seeing them as art-school dropouts dabbling in horror visuals and high-tech gadgetry. Conversely, the die-hard alternative crowd would probably scoff at the band's eventual arena-rock status. Needless to say, Rob Zombie and company's bastard aberration was on a distant plane all on its own and that's ultimately what made it cool. Now you can relive the evolution of this uncanny beast through this new box set.

White Zombie began as an underground spectacle, playing noisy, garage rock with themes drawing upon horror films and the darker side of pop culture. The band would go on to release a couple of indie albums before getting signed to Geffen in the early '90s. Although there was a respectable buzz, it took months to make any headway with a fan populace still enamored with the likes of Guns N' Roses, Metallica and even Whitesnake to some degree. White Zombie was still a bit too offbeat to take hold. Soon, exposure on a little MTV cartoon called Beavis and Butt-head would change all that, bringing White Zombie to the forefront of heavy rock for a spell....full text

Most peoples’ experience with White Zombie was the whirlwind stretch from when they exploded with 1992’s La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Vol. 1 until they imploded after 1995’s Astro-Creep: 2000 .... But White Zombie had paved quite a history for themselves long before they became an overnight sensations - it’s just that hardly anyone knew it. Perhaps for good reason.

This four-CD, one-DVD retrospective will certainly help fill in the blanks - literally all of them - for those who jumped onto the White Zombie bandwagon once “Thunder Kiss ‘65” was on MTV all friggin’ day and Beavis & Butt-head were going apeshit over them. Let Sleeping Corpses Lie brings together all 64 songs the band ever released - some of them extremely rare - into one all-encompassing, chronological package that shows just what a long strange trip their career actually was. The DVD tosses in White Zombie’s various videos and a bunch of bootleg-quality live footage for good measure....full text

I’m sure you’re scratching your head seeing White Zombie in the review section, especially with something new. Well this release isn’t new at all but a collection of almost every single song that White Zombie ever recorded. This includes the trippy punk of the pre-Geffen days, the major label albums they are famous for, as well as the songs recorded for various movie soundtracks. The last disc of this 5 disc boxset is a DVD containing all the music videos and some various live footage over the years.

To me this is the single greatest music related item that could have ever been released. Being a super geek for White Zombie since roughly 1993, I’ve always tried to get my hands on the early material. Since EBay auctions get pretty pricey for the old material, I’ve since settled on downloading the old albums and only occasionally decide to break the bank on one of the early works. This boxset makes it easier to deal with not being able to get my hands on original copies. Eventually I will own an original copy of all the old records but having all the songs in one shot is a pretty good concellation prize.

The best way to review this album would be to break down each disc.

Disc 1 contains material from the very first release from the band, Gods On Voodoo Moon. The 2nd half of the album is the 2nd EP release titled, Psycho-Head Blowout. Jammed in the middle of those two albums is the single 7” called Pig Heaven/Slaughter The Grey. This is the earliest and rawest of all the White Zombie material. Other than Rob’s nasal vocals it has no resemblance to the sound they are most famous for. My only complaint with this disc is the Gods On Voodoo Moon portion is missing 2 songs (Black Friday & Dead Or Alive). These songs were only available on the cassette version of the album....full text
