If Keyshia Cole tired of the nonstop Mary J. Blige comparisons her first two discs of raw-edged R&B earned her, she's chosen an odd way to escape them: On A Different Me, this Oakland-born belter turns her focus from heartbreak to happiness only a few years after Blige promised she was done with drama. Fortunately, Cole (the star of her own hit BET reality series) still sounds plenty intense singing about finding a guy who completes her; in her experience-ravaged vocals you can hear relief, but also the knowledge that stability has a way of attracting trouble. It is hard for an artist to fully shine when they are constantly compared to a mega star. We've seen this happen to many of our heavily slept on artists: Bubba Sparxx to Eminem, Sisqo to K-Ci, Robin Thicke to Justin Timberlake, and Keyshia Cole to Mary J. Bilge. Now don't get it twisted, Mary had already solidified the female drama life in the 90s. With the economy in such a slump, going a different route than what your fans are used to is a hit-or-miss. And this change is what really makes Keyshia shine....full text |

| Keyshia Cole has said her biggest musical influence is Mary J. Blige, and if that’s true she’s following in her role model’s footsteps precisely. In fact, Cole is next in line to inherit the Queen of R&B crown from Ms. Blige. It’s not Cole’s commercial success that makes her the next Queen (though she’s had plenty), and it’s not her supermodel looks (though she’s certainly beautiful). No, the quality that puts her on top is simple – it’s her soul. Soul can’t be taught, you either have it or you don’t, and Cole has so much soul at times it seems to overwhelm her. Pop music is r&b stripped of the pain, so while her more famous peers like Beyonce and Rihanna are certainly pop royalty, they could never be true Queens of R&B....full text |
