Anthony Hamilton - The Point Of It All reviewReleased almost exactly three years after Ain't Nobody Worryin', The Point of It All has a slightly lighter tone compared to that of its immediate predecessor and Comin' from Where I'm From. But just as Anthony Hamilton has been able to incorporate modern sounds that fit with his Southern soul throwback voice, the contrasting feel of this album comes through its subtleties. Take "Cool," the album's lead single, which parlays the stress of financial strain into a good time without resembling mindless escapism. The album's opener, "The News," is as poignant as Curtis Mayfield's "Pusherman" and Willie Hutch's "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" (the latter even quoted), but it is likewise delivered through swashbuckling blaxploitation-style funk. Vocally, Hamilton has never been as dynamic as he is on this song, switching between his grittily textured baritone and surprisingly effective upper register. As much power is leant to some of the ballads: "Please Stay" is startling in its heartfelt regret; "The Point of It All," sparse and elegant, is like the 3 a.m. version of "Can't Let Go," equally steamy and romantic. There are lulls, such as the drippy adult contemporary of "Her Heart," but they're offset (and then some) by the standouts. At least a third of the album's contents would have to be part of any representative introduction to Hamilton. In fact, this puts a cap on a three-album run as remarkable as any other in 2000s R&B....full text

Gaye. His rich vocal prowess, steeped both in sexy R&B and the traditions of the church, is a rarity during a time when soul has been hijacked by computers. Gaye's influence announces itself immediately on this new disc's "The News," a song about troubled days and working things through. The vocalist has always sung about adult responsibility and finding the power to transcend all circumstances. With subtle eroticism, he's dealt with the complexities of love and romance. He follows suit here, with dimension and nuance. His singing throughout is flawless and expressive. In "I Did It for Sho" he looks at love dying and the need to move on; the complex two-part "Prayin' for You/Superman" cuts to the heart of who we are as flawed people. He updates his sound with "Cool," a sleek track about two people chilling as long as they have each other (though an ungainly rap by David Banner nearly ruins it). "Fine Again," an expression of healing, could be an anthem in these tough times. And that is, indeed, the point of it all. (Out tomorrow)...full text

The Point of It All (Zomba)

There's been a ghost that has haunted Anthony Hamilton's previous albums: misery. Zealots may find their refuge in Hamilton's heartache, but the North Carolina artist is a bit unguarded this time around. With Hamilton’s fifth album, The Point of It All (La Face), the presence of hope has triumphantly taken lead.

Differing from immediate predecessors, The Point of it All, embraces Hamilton's newfound happiness on tracks like the piano-driven, "Falling In Love". On "Soul's On Fire,” the drums carry out an unfiltered intensity, setting the tone for Hamilton’s story of infidelity where he confesses and prays to be freed of guilt.

Hope dangles from misery on “Hard to Breathe,” as Hamilton deals with issues of seeing an ex-lover’s face in every other woman. And “Her Heart" is Hamilton’s thank you over airy chords to the women who rode with him through troublesome times. ...full text
