Keyshia Cole - A Different Me reviewIf Keyshia Cole tired of the nonstop Mary J. Blige comparisons her first two discs of raw-edged R&B earned her, she's chosen an odd way to escape them: On A Different Me, this Oakland-born belter turns her focus from heartbreak to happiness only a few years after Blige promised she was done with drama. Fortunately, Cole (the star of her own hit BET reality series) still sounds plenty intense singing about finding a guy who completes her; in her experience-ravaged vocals you can hear relief, but also the knowledge that stability has a way of attracting trouble. One of the problems of young artists is a refusal to grow. Keyshia Cole seems determined to defy that. On her first two records, good grooves and great singing were matched by her healthy arrogance and fire. Here she's reining in some of the 'tude, and, along with her star producers, showing a sweeter and supremely sexy side. Cole is never going to be demure (would we want her to be?), but there's an undulating quality to some of these tracks that envelops you. She's not trying to take you out with the riptide this time. "You Complete Me" is soulful and vulnerable, with a lack of mistrust and defiance. Maybe love is just simple and real. The acoustic "This Is Us" is sweet, gorgeous, and should be a smash. The ballad "Trust" with Monica has a swirl of strings that complements the two big voices. It might be too much for some early fans; when you throw curveballs, people miss them. And a few of the hip-hop-infused tracks fail. Yes, Keyshia grew up with Tupac, but let him rest, please ("Playa Cardz Right"). And Nas adds nada elsewhere. Throughout, though, Cole emphatically dares to be different - and pretty great. (Out tomorrow)...full text

Keyshia Cole didn’t invent an alias on this, her third album, but perhaps she should have. After all, Beyoncé’s recent attempt at a split identity, Sasha Fierce, was but a hypertrophied version of her longstanding personality, whereas the side of herself that Ms. Cole displays here feels much more like an actual character.

Or perhaps a caricature. On her first two albums Ms. Cole was one of the most textured singers in R&B, one of the few brave enough to use a young Mary J. Blige as a template and, at times, improve on it. In her songs relationships are flimsy or worse, and their impact is felt in Ms. Cole’s powerful, unchecked voice. On “Love,” the signature heartbreak song from her first album, she sounded as if she was coughing out the words, barely holding the notes in between tears....full text
