 The inspired teaming up of Super Furry Animals main man Gruff Rhys with Boom Bip was one of this years more pleasant surprises, their STAINLESS STEEL long player a definite musical highpoint. Themed around the life of John Delorean, the record is home to its fair share of standout moments, DREAM CARS fortunately being one of those, handily released here as a single in its own right.
Blending eighties era electro pop with conscious hip hop vibes and Gruff Rhys distinctive vocal presence, DREAM CARS plugs the gaps between Heaven
17 and Aesop Rock, a slice of classic sounding AM pop with just enough of a hint of edginess and discontent to really resonate. A marriage of shimmery synth stabs, crunchy guitar chords and melodic vocal harmonies, DREAM CARS is essential sounding stuff. Who else but he would have found such musical capital from the story of a car manufacturer indicted in one of the most notorious drug-entrapment escapades of the 1980s? You won't find Keane penning an album to the Westland scandal anytime soon anymore than Snow Patrol will write a musical about Lt-Colonel Oliver North and the Iran-Contra affair....full text |
