Death Vessel - Nothing is Precious Enough For Us reviewNo, Joel Thibodeau is not a girl. Though the Death Vessel mastermind, whose falsetto matches his pixielike stature and long hair, is probably used to people making that mistake. On Thibodeau's Sub Pop debut, his voice is as delicate as Juliana Hatfield's, threading wispy notes into haunting ballads that crib from the backwoods folk of acts like Iron and Wine. The result evokes a makeshift jam session in an Appalachian cabin: fingerpicked ditties like "Block My Eye" and "Jitterakadie" use railroad spikes and wineglasses as percussive instruments; the honky-tonk rag "The Widening" builds its old-timey vibe on a cornet and a flukulele; and "Bruno's Torso" beefs up its airy acoustic melody with marching-band drums. The lyrics remain cryptic: On the slow-burner "Peninsula," Thibodeau rhymes "bejesus needed more" with "neonatal ward." Joel Thibodeau aka Death Vessel is evidently not a man to hide his intelligence under a bushel. His intellectual precocity only adds to the similarities he shares with fellow virtuoso Sufjan Stevens. ‘Jitterkadie’ and ‘Brunos Torso’ would easily make it onto any Stevens album and that should be viewed as the ultimate compliment. Thibodeau’s voice has a remarkable clarity and although its pitch can grate slightly at times, this is on the whole an album well worth investigating....full text

It created quite an impression and the often sublime neo folk vibe that came from the band opened doors for them to tour with the likes of Iron & Wine. Founder member and vocalist Joel Thibodeau was born in Berlin, Germany but is now based in Brooklyn. Forming a partnership with Erik Carlson, of Area C, and adding a whole host of additional musical talents, including Micah Blue Smaldone (Pinkerton Thugs), they formed what is now Death Vessel.

Stay Close was well received not only for the strength of the song-writing but also the often minimalistic and simple atmosphere it created. However it was the unique vocals of Joel Thibodeau that attracted a lot of the attention. He has an extraordinary soprano tone – producing an exceptionally high register that led to him often being mistaken for female. That is of course until Death Vessel’s reputation began to spread and the uncertainty all but quashed....full text
